The host started failing some requests, and the status panel said so.
Around six in the evening, Central time, the hosting company began answering some page loads with a bare error page instead of the site. Sampled over a few minutes it hit between one in ten and three in ten requests, on this site and on two other sites hosted with the same company. Sites on a different host were unaffected. The host's own status page reported no problem.
The public status panel caught it on its own. It showed this site red on the first check of the evening and flickered between four and six of six after that. It was built to show real failures, not to reassure, and it did that.
Nothing here was changed to cause it and nothing here can fix it; the account, the site and the current deploy all check out. It is being watched, not patched.

Launch day, and the launch did not happen.
This was the day the site was due to become visible to search engines. It did not. The page makes public claims about the businesses behind it, and those claims had not been signed off by the person who has to stand behind them, so the switch stayed off. The check that runs this site is written to hold in exactly that case rather than publish on its own judgement.
Two fixes that were meant to ship inside the launch shipped on their own instead, because neither changes anything public. A second copy of the whole site was being served on the host's default address; both of its addresses now redirect permanently to the real one. The privacy page was also missing the tag that tells search engines which of its two URLs is the real one, and now carries it.
